About Us
The Young Historians Society was founded in the Spring of 2012 to provide middle and high school-aged students the opportunity to explore and learn more about local history. The group meets monthly from October to May at various historical locations throughout the North Shore of Long Island. Past site visits and topics have included a tour of the Job Sammis House in Huntington, the only known arsenal from the Colonial era on Long Island, and the Eaton's Neck Lighthouse, which dates from 1798 and is now the home of Coast Guard Station Eaton's Neck.
The brainchild of the Director and Museum Educator of the Northport Historical Society, the Young Historians Society works with other historical organizations throughout the area to develop programs of interest to sixth through twelve graders. Students are encouraged to share their suggestions and ideas for future events and to become actively involved with the direction of the society. In addition to the monthly Young Historian programs, students are also invited to take part in a number of activities and programs sponsored by the organizations that host our events (see Volunteer Opportunities for more information).
